How do you know it's real 925 silver?
Genuine sterling silver is typically stamped "925" (or "S925" / "Sterling") somewhere on the piece — this means 92.5% pure silver, 7.5% other metals added for strength. It should feel slightly heavier than similar-looking costume jewelry, and a magnet will not attract it (silver is non-magnetic).
Why does silver tarnish?
Sterling silver contains a small amount of copper for durability. Over time, it naturally reacts with sulfur compounds in the air (from perfume, humidity, or everyday pollution) and forms a thin dark layer. This is a normal chemical reaction, not a defect — and it's easy to reverse.
Daily care
- Put your jewelry on after applying perfume, lotion, or hairspray — not before.
- Take it off before showering, swimming, or exercising.
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
Storage
Store each piece separately in a closed box or a sealable pouch to limit air and moisture exposure. Keep away from direct sunlight and humid rooms (like bathrooms).
If it tarnishes anyway
A light tarnish can usually be polished off with a dedicated silver polishing cloth. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, or harsh DIY methods — they can scratch the surface. For pieces with gemstones, avoid ultrasonic cleaners and dips; a soft cloth is the safest option.
